Why WordPress?

The web design industry has undergone many changes over the years I have been involved in it.  Most of them have been technical in nature and I won’t bore you with the details.  One of the more interesting for those of you who own (or want to own) websites is the use of content management systems (CMS for short).  What in the world is a content management system?  In simple terms, it is a website that is designed so the owner can manage and maintain it without being a technical guru.  In other words, you don’t have to make a career out of maintaining your site.  If you have an e-commerce site, a well designed CMS will allow you to add products and pages quickly and painlessly. Out of all the CMS’s available, by far the most popular is WordPress.  WordPress started out a few years ago as a system to create blogs.  Over the past few years, however, it has grown into a system that a capable web designer can transform into just about any type of site.  WordPress sites can be a little tricky to get set up initially as they rely heavily on PHP (a web programing language) and databases (not just straight HTML and CSS).  But once set up, with a little training and practice, the owner can normally add content and do routine maintanence without a web designer’s help.
